The nice thing about the Moen glass shelf, is that they included a paper template that you can use to help you figure out where to drill and mount the metal mounting plates for the shelf. I was surprised that American Standard did NOT include something similar, especially for the price that you pay for these. Instead, the instructions say to just take the metal mounting plate and figure out where one goes. Then, you're on your own to make sure that you mount the second mounting plate EXACTLY 24" away from the first...oh, and don't forget to make sure everything is level!
Not impossible, but definitely would have been much easier if they included a paper template with the towel bar! And of course, the bar itself won't stick to the magnetic part of a level, so you have to hold the level against the bar as you try to figure out whether you are putting the second mounting plate in the right place. I ended up installing the decorative metal parts (escutcheon plate and bulbous metal part) on the first mounting plate. Then, I inserted and held the bar with the level as I eyeballed where the middle of the second mounting plate was supposed to go (the mounting plate has a central post where you screw the bulbous part to, so you can look through the C-shaped end of the bar to eyeball where the post is centered).
This sounds rough, but I was able to install two of the towel bars successfully. Oh, and before I started drilling, I did check first to see if there were any studs behind where the mounting plates would go, so I knew what size hole to drill. The towel bars did come with screws, mollies and screw-in drywall anchors, so at least you are covered for various types of wall installations. The screws are a bit short looking, and I didn't think they would be long enough to get past the drywall and into a stud, but they did seem to mount the plates securely into the wood studs (but probably just barely).American Standard 8040.240.228 Prairie Field 24-Inch Towel Bar, Chrome/Polished Brass (Purchased on 12/23/2008)
