. . . . in light of all the glowing reviews read, and based on other purchasers' experience I purchased this product. Looks good, very wide as advertised, but disappointingly inconsistent. Followed all instructions, to the letter, but never managed to get it to weigh the same twice. Both my husband and I tried, and both got varying weights. Not helpful when embarking on a weight reduction regime, so it is unfortunately having to go back. Thank goodness Amazon's return system is so user-friendly.Update August 1st 2010
I was somewhat surprised to receive an email response from the Vice President of EatSmart Products within about 20 minutes of the posting the above. He assured me I must have received a lemon (his words), which apparently happens from time to time. He also went on to say, and I quote, "I was hoping to get you a replacement immediately under our warranty program. Its the least we can do after putting a defective product in your hands."
I was duly impressed and told him so in my responding email. However, to date I have not received a replacement, nor do I now expect/want one to arrive. Having re-read other reviews of this and other EatSmart models, I believe this model is, in fact, a lemon. Other models seem to be consistently accurate, whereas, it appears, this particular model is not.
I am now looking elsewhere for a consistent and accurate scale.
Further update August 4th 2010
Today I received an unexpected package via FedEx. I had duly returned my 'lemon' and received a refund. I thought that was the end of the story. Not so! A new scale from EatSmart Products, with a letter from the Vice President, apologizing for the lemon and enclosing a new scale, which, he informed me, has been thoroughly tested for accuracy.
This accuracy I can confirm. Both my husband and I tested, and re-tested, and there was never a variation. I even tested it with one of my cats spot on each time.
EatSmart clearly stand by their products, recognise there are ocassional flaws, and quickly correct the situation. I am a very impressed and happy customer. Obviously a company which values their name and reputation, and rightly so.
Correction: After making this review, the VP of EatSmart products attempted to contact me regarding my dissatisfaction with their scale. After being unable to reach me, they sent me a replacement along with an explanation that I'd probably received a lemon. I'm incredibly impressed with their superior customer service.
UPDATE: 2 years later, this scale is still incredibly accurate & going strong. :)This is by far the best scale I have ever owned. I love the oversized platform, the clean look of it and that it only requires two batteries. You get the same weight no matter how many times you step on and off right in a row. I did this with every family member in my home to be sure it was accurate. It was right on every time. The prompt delivery by the company was a big plus.Overall a very good scale with only one small issue I found.
-Nice looking, no problem keeping it out all the time.
-Nice and wide so no having to have your feet awkwardly close together.
-Best display I have seen on a scale, super easy to read.
-Sensitivity is good with the following exception:
If you weight yourself, let the scale turn off then weight yourself again after removing some clothing or picking up a small object (that weighs about half a pound or so) the scale will read the exact same weight as before. You can see the scale settling on the new weight then switches to the old weight right before flashing the weight. I am not sure how long it takes for the scale to reset that behavior.
Its not much of a big deal to me as it doesn't affect how I use the scale. Though users who report that it has great repeatability should note that it is designed to be that way.I was looking for a scale and had been doing a fair amount of looking around the net in order to find one that would be both consistent and accurate. Well, I found this model that says it'll handle up to 440 lbs. I am about 6'1" and weigh 185.(according to the scale) I was a little apprehensive at first when I saw this model with all the others listed. I then began to read the small handful of reviews that were listed at the time. I simply wanted a unit that I could rely on and wouldn't have all the bells and whistles that are offered on some of the other brands/models. I didn't find out until later that the reason there were not many reviews was because this model was in fact brand new and had just come out.
My order experience could have been better but to be honest, I'm glad it happened the way that it did. The day the scale showed up at my door it was defective. I had un-boxed it, inserted the two AAA batteries which it came with, and turned it over, set it down, stepped on it, and nothing. For some reason it was not working. Needless to say it was a pretty basic problem and I was able to fix it and it has been working ever since. After I fixed it I contacted the manufacturer to let them know about the problem I had with my scale, and after I received a very fast response from them I was thrilled to be a proud owner of a new EatSmart scale. So, even though I had a problem at first I can honestly say that I can recommend this scale to anyone. The company will stand behind the product. Order with confidence! Three other of my friends and family have based on my experience.
